Crown Challenges Accused’s Story in Sam Graham Murder Trial
October 17, 2025 — Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
During Friday’s court proceedings, Crown prosecutors in the Sam Graham murder trial argued that Montana Lewis had several other options the night Sam Graham was fatally stabbed on November 12, 2020. Assistant Crown Attorney Matthew Caputo told the court that instead of waiting at home to “deal with it himself,” as Lewis reportedly said, he could have called police, left the house, or avoided confrontation altogether.
Caputo stated that Lewis wanted Graham to apologize for pushing him and for “disrespecting his role as man of the house.” Lewis testified that he didn’t recall making those statements but admitted he was “a mess” when speaking to police and remembered when the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder following Graham’s death.
Throughout the hearing, the Crown appeared to systematically dismantle Lewis’s defense, portraying his actions as intentional rather than accidental or defensive. Prosecutors emphasized inconsistencies in his testimony and argued that Lewis made a conscious choice to confront Sam Graham rather than seek help or walk away.
Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday before Superior Court Justice Alexander Kurke, with defense counsel David Bayliss representing Lewis.
