Victim Impact Statements Shared During Sentencing Hearing
This week, we addressed the court during the sentencing hearing of Montana Lewis, who was convicted of manslaughter in the 2020 death of our son, Samuel Graham Jr.
More than five years after Sammy’s death, the emotional impact on our family remains profound. During the hearing, we shared the devastating reality of living without our son and the lasting effects his loss has had on our family. According to reporting by SooToday, dozens of victim impact statements were submitted by family members and friends whose lives have been forever changed by Sammy’s death.
For those who have followed Sammy’s story through Sammy’s Backpacks, these statements serve as a reminder that victims are never statistics. Behind every case is a son, a brother, a friend, and a family whose lives have been permanently altered.
The sentencing hearing continued on June 12, with the Crown seeking a lengthy penitentiary sentence while the defence argued for a significantly reduced sentence. Justice Alexander Kurke has reserved his decision, with the matter scheduled to return to court on July 15.
As we continue this journey in Sammy’s memory, we remain committed to honouring his life and advocating for victims and their families. While no court decision can undo the loss we have suffered, we are grateful for the support, compassion, and encouragement we have received from our community over the past five and a half years.
Thank you to everyone who has stood beside us, shared Sammy’s story, and supported the mission of Sammy’s Backpacks. Your kindness helps ensure that Sammy’s legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of others.
